Understanding the Cost of Living in France

We are often asked as advisors how much it costs to live in France, especially when comparing it to other countries. The answer, of course, varies widely based on individual needs—it's a bit like asking, how long is a piece of string?

For example, I once met someone who couldn’t possibly live without a €5,000 per month clothes allowance, and I also know friends who live on less than €1,000 per month. The budget above is based on a couple.

So much of the cost depends on the area in which you live. One town’s cost of living may be vastly different from the next. Here are a few questions to consider:

  • Do you have a pool?
  • Do you have a lot of land?
  • Do you have Gîtes?
  • Is the property in Cannes or Caen?
  • Is it in the Alps or the Limousin?
  • Do you rely on oil/gas heating in a colder area (expect €2,000 per year in costs)?

Rent vs. Owning Property

The budget above is based on renting rather than purchasing. So, if you owned your property and had healthcare provided through the French state rather than privately, these costs could drop to less than €1,500 per month.

If you return to your country of origin regularly or have a passion for travel, expect your costs to be higher.

The above table provides a good indication and is a great starting point, but each situation is different.
